Jegun and nearby villages

Chateau Pélat is a short walk from the attractive 12th century 'bastide' village of Jegun, with excellent restaurant, lively bar, bank, post office, mini-supermarket and pharmacy, as well as a fabulous bakery for your daily breakfast which should not be missed; It’s a 10 minute drive to Castera-Verduzan, which has a top restaurant (Le Florida, pictured), farmers’ market, and shops including an excellent butcher and well-stocked supermarket; and about a 10 minute drive to Chateau de Lavardens, an historic monument, with arts centre and terrace restaurant.

Days out and fine food

Other larger villages (Vic Fezansac and Castera Verduzan) are a short drive away. The cathedral city of Auch (pictured above) is 25-30 minutes from the house. All of these have great markets every week with incredible local produce, charcuterie, cheese, wine and artisans. Wherever you go, meat eaters will want to try confit or magret - two superb duck dishes which the region specialises in. Toulouse, where the nearest airport is found, is a beautiful city in its own right and well worth a night at the beginning or end of your stay if you have time.

Beautiful countryside

While it would be completely reasonable to stay at home eating, drinking, swimming, reading, and sleeping, the surrounding countryside of the Gers affords endless opportunities for beautiful walks for those who want them, perhaps finishing with a cold beer or a good meal. While the weather is consistently warm in the peak summer months, it is rarely too hot for a walk in the late afternoon - and the rolling hills, patchwork farmland, and stunning sunsets with views of the Pyrénées in the distance make it well worth your efforts.
